Most buying guides tell you what they recommend. This page tells you how those recommendations are made, including the parts that are less flattering. If anything here does not match what you find on our pages, we would rather hear about it than not.

Who writes this

Our guides carry a house byline, the TheOmniSelect editorial team, rather than an individual name. That is deliberate: every guide is the output of the same process rather than one person's opinion, and we would rather you judge the process than a byline.

What we do not do

We do not test products in our hands. We do not fly the drones, run the power stations or wear the headphones, and you will not find us claiming otherwise. Plenty of excellent sites do that work, employ qualified specialists and take products apart, and where that is what you need, they are the right place to go.

We say this plainly because the alternative, vague language about hands-on experience, is how a lot of affiliate sites imply testing they never did. We would rather be useful about something narrower than impressive about something untrue.

What we actually do

We work with data that can be checked. Before a product appears in a guide, we verify it against Amazon's live catalogue and against Keepa's price and rating history: the current price, its 90 and 180-day averages, the star rating and the number of ratings behind it. Every page shows the date it was last verified, so you can judge how fresh it is.

That is also why we compare on the things a specification sheet can settle, and say so: how much a tub weighs empty, how long a battery lasts, which protocols a hub speaks, how heavy a pair of headphones is by the afternoon. Where a question needs a product in your hands to answer, we tell you that rather than guess.

How we choose the ten

We start from what is genuinely available with enough ratings to mean something, then remove near-duplicates. Ten variations of one product help nobody, so we prefer ten answers to different situations.

We also keep products we have reservations about when they are the only sensible option in their category, and we explain the reservation on the page instead of quietly dropping them. A guide where every product is excellent is a guide that is not telling you everything.

Rankings and stores

Each guide ranks ten products. Affiliate commissions never buy a position and never change a verdict, and we do not accept payment for placement or for favorable coverage.

Our links point to Amazon and you are sent to your own country's store automatically. A specific product is not on sale in every country; where that happens, Amazon shows you the nearest equivalent.

Prices, and being wrong about them

We publish price studies built on Keepa's history, and we publish the raw data alongside them, including which products we excluded and why. When a figure looks wrong we would rather leave it out and explain the gap than present a clean number we do not trust.

Prices change faster than articles do. We have already had to remove a claim from a published comparison because live data contradicted it, in every language it had been translated into. We will keep doing that. If a page contradicts what you see on Amazon today, Amazon is right and we are out of date.

How we make money

When you buy through our links we may earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend, and the honest reason to believe that is on the pages themselves: we regularly tell readers that the cheaper product is the better buy, or that they should wait, or that they do not need the thing at all.
